Chapter Eight
One little piggie was going to the lake. Two little piggies were patrolling the farm. Three little piggies were heading for the barn. And two little piggies were already exactly where he wanted them, inside the house, oblivious to his presence.
The Piggy Man had waited long enough. He wanted to squish the little beasts to a pulp. Especially the little girl with the brown bob of hair. She had always been suspicious of him, always close to thwarting his plans since sheâd caught him watching the house. But not this time. He watched as she went into the barn, hand in hand with her older sister, looking around her anxiously for trouble.
She'll never see me coming.
The Piggy Man was about to move from his place in the shadows when two more figures exited the house. He cursed quietly to himself as the two boys settled on the outdoor patio on deckchairs. He'd forgotten about the constant watchers outside the house. With half the group on a wild goose chase at the supermarket, he'd assumed he'd accounted for everyone. With the group growing all the time, it was hard to keep track of all the little piggies. But this mass kill had been months in the making. He might not get an opportunity this good again. He had to go through with his plans, even if there were risks involved. If everyone stuck to their usual schedules, then all would be well.
They'd all be dead by daylight.
The house was quiet with everyone out and about. It gave Zoe the creeps. She was busy cleaning the bathroom with Poppy, trying to take her mind off the group and their inevitable face-off with the Piggy Man. At least they will have the element of surprise, Zoe thought, The Piggy Man is dangerous. I hope they know what theyâre doing.
Poppy was furiously scrubbing at the frosted glass window that she had already cleaned several times. Her face was screwed up in concentration and the window was squeaking with every jerky movement of her arm. It sounded like a pig squealing. Zoe shuddered, trying not to think too hard about it.
"Poppy, don't you think that's clean enough by now?"
Poppy's shoulders relaxed a little and she let out a long sigh.
"Sorry. I know I must look mad right now. But I just...I can't keep my head straight. I keep thinking about them all at the supermarket. Andâ¦and Cassie."
Zoe nodded in understanding. She was endlessly glad that Patrick, Fletcher and Charlie were still on the farm. Even if she didnât know Sadie and Freddieâs whereabouts. Zoe swallowed. Since Patrick has passed on the news, sheâd tried hard not to think about it. At least they were out of harmâs way right now. And theyâd come back, surely? Once Freddie cooled down from the argument sheâd had with Charlie. Yes, Zoe thought to herself, trying to believe it. They will come back.
"I know. And I know you're trying to distract yourself. But...I guess we could clean somewhere else? Actually create productivity out of our stress?"
Poppy managed a small smile.
